As E-Mail program, Mail user agent (MUA) (dt. about post office user program) or also briefly Mail Client, designates one a program, with which enamels are read, written and dispatched.
Receipt
In order to indicate a E-Mail, a E-Mail program can download the enamels either of a Mail server (usually with POP3 or POP3S-Protokoll), on an already locally existing mailbox accesses (e.g. received by smtp or UUCP) or the enamels directly on the server work on (usually over the IMAP or IMAPS minutes).
Send
For the dispatch of a E-Mail the E-Mail program of the user sends these usually by Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (smtp) to a Smtp Relay server (also Smarthost). This Relay server continues to send the E-Mail then to the (see also E-Mail).
Configuration
A E-Mail program needs the following data for configuration usually:
- Server for calling (POP3-Server up, IMAP server)
- User name for the call
- Password for the call
- Server for dispatching (smtp Relay server, Smarthost)
- User name for sending
- Password for sending
Frequently are identical POP3 and smtp servers as well as the entrance data.
