A document server is an Internet service, on which electronic publications can be published and archived. Contrary to a simple publication on homepage ensures the operator of the publication server also for long-term archiving and development of the published documents by bibliographic meta data. Frequently document servers for Preprints are used.

In Germany document servers can be certified by the German initiative for network information (DINI). The open Archives initiative promotes the cross-linking of document servers. With the OAI-PMH developed by it the existence of several document servers can be scanned together.

Most German document servers are university writing servers, which take up above all electronic theses.
