Document scanners serve the rapid collection of large document quantities in as short a time as possible. They are inserted in the paperless office, into banks and insurance and into libraries, in order to be able to archive documents as space-saving and efficiently as possible. One calls the collection process scanning.

The scanners are usually implemented as passage scanners and can process after execution document pile from 50 to 1000 sides independently. Most models are able by means of two CCD sensor borders the front and the back in a Scan to seize at the same time (duplex). Some models are implemented as combination of Durchzugs and flat bed scanners, in order to know also bound documents without destruction scanning.

The employment always takes place in a close interaction with a software solution for archives, Enterprise content management of systems or Dokumentenmanagemensysteme as e.g. with programs such as ELO Office (ELO), d.capture (d.velop) or PAPER haven (ScanSoft). Frequently special applications of software are used such as quality control, picture improvement, ocr and other document technologies together with the document scanner. Often a special software is used for the binding of document scanners to computers or networks and the processing of scanned documents.

The depends on the selected or available dissolution. The optical dissolution of document scanners is usually with 200-300 dpi, in the meantime is also dpi possible for 600-1200. It is to be differentiated whether dpi directly with single cells are seized or by software interpolated. In the office surrounding field a dissolution of 300 is judged dpi as sufficient.

For the collection of business documents with priority pure black/white devices (with green as blind color) or scanner, which differentiate between several gray tones, are used. Increased however color scanners are used for the collection of documents. During the collection of Farbbildern the color scanners already became generally accepted.

The speed of the scanner depends on the interpretation and the intended operational area. With scanners for the job the typical values are with 25 DIN-A4-Seiten/Minute. With central high-performance systems can be reciprocally seized up to 500 DIN-A4-Seiten/Minute. Often with such devices a Scan is not only supplied, but the document at the same time on microfilm photographed and the data by means of ocr for the subsequent treatment extracts.

Large manufacturers are Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, Kodak and Canon.
