With distribution of load (English load balancing, also load interlocking) procedures are described, in order to keep with storage, the transport and the processing of objects given capacity borders.

Thus consumption points in the winter or disturbances can be compensated better.

Distribution of load in the computer engineering

In the computer engineering extensive computations or large quantities of inquiries will distribute by means of distribution of load on several parallel working systems. This can have very different developments. A simple distribution of load takes place for example on computers with several processors. Each process can be implemented on its own processor. The kind of the distribution of the processes on processors can have thereby a large influence on the total performance of the system, since Cache contents are local e.g. for each processor.

One finds another procedure in Computerclustern. Here several computers form a group, which outward mostly behaves like an individual system. This is realized with server load Balancing procedure. Some possible procedures are connecting a computer, that the inquiries divide or the use of DNS with the Round Robin procedure.

To likewise distribute load Balancing (distribution of load) with data/language lines used around the flow of traffic on parallel led lines. In practice however frequently problems arise to distribute the data/language traffic evenly on both lines. Therefore the solution is usually implemented that a line finds as and the second line as backward channel use.

Distribution of load takes place also at large server farms, which e.g. serve the answer of HTTP inquiries. There systems are upstream (front-end servers), which distribute the individual inquiries according to fixed criteria on the bakings servers. By the term load balancing is understood in the broadest sense also a mechanism to the reliability: by the structure of a cluster (see: Computer cluster) and the distribution of the inquiries on individual systems, one reaches an increase of the reliability, if the loss of a system and the inquiries are recognized are transferred automatically to another system (see also: High availability and/or High Availability, "“hectar"”).
