Discogs (of English discography = "„Diskografie "“) is a free, on-line data base for Diskografien of musicians and Plattenlabeln, developed of members themselves.

Structure and extent

Discogs was created in October 2000 by Kevin Lewandowski. Initially Lewandowski wanted to administer the own disk collection on its homepage, which met with soon approval and fast to an ambitious project developed; a comprehensive overview of the category of the electronic music should develop.

Due to the enormous user increase one decided to expand immediately the data base on all category. Thus were so far added:

  • October 2000: Electronic music
  • January 2004: Hip Hop
  • December 2004: Skirt, jazz
  • October 2005: Radio/Soul, Reggae, Latin
  • January 2006: Blues, Non Music
  • February 2006: Pop

The extension by category the classical period, people music and world music will take place shortly.

At present are in the entire data base (conditions: 12. May 2006):

  • The 541.845 releases
  • 375.973 artists
  • 48.117 disk label

The project to extend Discogs to an open SOURCE data base was so far not realized.

Function mode

Members of the Discogs Community can administer their private music collection in one "„Collection "“and "„Wantlist "“. Besides one can buy and sell clay/tone carrier (release) since at the end of of 2005 also. Discogs appears here not as a dealer, but only as a mediator, similarly as eBay. If a user possesses the releases, which are not yet in the data base, it can add these according to certain formatting rules. All entries (tender) and changes (updates) are examined before the conversion in the data base in a Review process moderators select by freiwilligen, and rejected then either accepted (accepted) or with reason (rejected). By this system of the presentation and the constantly continuing process at improvements and corrections Discogs attains a high degree at correctness and detailingness and can thus from the multiplicity of other music data bases distinguish itself.
