That digitally Object Identifier (DOI) (of English objects digital for designators) a clear and permanent identification of digital objects permits. With digital objects is here meant: intellectual goods in digital form. The system of the DOI is comparable with those by ISBN and ISSN, goes however through its integrated localization function beyond that.

Identification of digital objects

Digital objects can be addressed via the address, under which they were put down. A possibility for it represents resource Identifier (URI) to the uniform. This presupposes however that this address does not change. Generally this condition is not fulfilled in the reality. The file of contents in addresses in the Internet is rather characterized by large evaporability. Therefore with the DOI a system created, which does not mark the place or resources, under which an object (momentary) put down is, but the object identifies. In addition, an object identification is alone not yet suitable for making the access possible to a certain object (which uses it, if one identified the object clearly, but not white, where one can get it).

Localization of digital objects

In order to make the access possible to identified objects, the international DOI donation, the operator of the DOI system, a system available, makes which assigns (or) the current location (e) of the document to the DOI. I.e. over the DOI a URI can be assigned to each digital object. If the location (thus the URI) of a digital document changes, (e.g. because the contents offerer restructures his server), then does not have this influence on the DOI, it must only the allocation in the DOI data base are updated. During the addressing of a document over the DOI a forwarding takes place to the URI, on which the object is up-to-date available, or if the object at several places is put down, to an overview of the associated URIs.

Example

The object, which is identified by the DOI 10.1007/s003390201377, can be found, by registering either the DOI into the input mask of the DOI donation, or by one directly to the URI, planned for it

http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s003390201377

goes, i.e., by placing the DOI the URI in front of the DOI Proxyservers http://dx.doi.org/.
