Courier is compatible a Mail transfer agent ("“MTA"”), to Sendmail.

It was developed by SAM Varshavchik. The program is freely available under the GPL.

It is modular developed and had all necessary modules, in order to put a complete Mailserver on:

• Courier MTA - the Mail transfer agent
• Courier IMAP - the IMAP server
• Courier SMAP - the SMAP server
• Courier-POP3 - the POP3 server
• Courier ESMTP - the smtp server
• Courier maildrop - the Mail Delivery agent
• Courier Webadmin - HTML an administration surface

The Authentifizierung for the individual modules takes over more particularly authdaemon, the which can use following data sources:

• authpwd - Authentifizierung against /etc/passwd.
• authshadow - in systems with shadow passwords.
• authpam - the PAM uses library for the Authentifizierung. On systems the PAM to use MUST be used authpam instead of authpwd or authshadow.
• authuserdb - Authentifizierung against a GDBM/DB data base, supports delivered Perl by with script.
• authcram - likewise Authentifizierung against a GDBM/DB data base, but uses CRAM-MD5 or CRAM-SHA1 Authentifizierung.
• authmysql - Authentifizierung by a MySQL data base.
• authpgsql - Authentifizierung by a PostgreSQL data base.
• authldap - Authentifizierung by a LDAP server.
• authvchkpw - vpopmail the library uses for the Authentifizierung.

Courier stores detailed enamels like qmail in the Maildir format.

Naturally Courier can deal also with SpamAssassin and virus checks.
