Content Switching is an advancement of the distribution of load (load balancing) of Web servers.
In the course of the years the requirements continued to increase to the computer hardware with Web servers. Already soon it was not sufficient to reproach for large only an individual server; rather the multiplicity of the inquiries at the servers could be only guaranteed, as the inquiry load was distributed on several computers (server farm) (distribution of load). For this distribution one was responsible the computer in the farm (the load divider, load balancer).
But it lasted not for a long time, and also this technology pushed to its borders. The server farms continued to increase. The current (2004) technology is well-known as "mega+ Proxy", and with this size a load divider is not sufficient for the distribution of the inquiries on the individual computers.
The idea was it now, already routs/SWITCHes, over which the data streams will transfer to the Web server farm, the distribution of the data to to few loaded servers make in each case to leave.
The problem thereby is, the data of the different servers of the server farm, which have everyone for itself another, own IP address to assign again to the correct user of the web page and also still ensure that possibly used Cookies of this web page remains consistent. To maintain in addition content Switche equipped with a "intelligent" technology, which is able, on the basis of URL information, Dateiextensionen, Headern and Cookies the correct allocation.
