A content filter is used for the filtering of certain contents in a network.

All detailed information (web pages) is scanned for closed URLs and words. If one of these words were found, instead of the requested side an alternative side is passed on to the Client. Content filters come particularly in firm networks and public Internet entrances to the employment. Usually thereby, pornography or illegal sides (keyword is tried: Not to permit right-wing extremism).

It is unfavorable that each side with appropriate words becomes closed. Also sides can be filtered, which use closed words in another context. If for example the word is closed Sex in each form, also the side of the locality sixths is filtered.

In order to go around this disadvantage, some content filters with weights work and reject a side only then if a certain sum is exceeded (in the above example about, if the word seems to Sex at least five times).

Good content filters can cachen as for well found URLs a certain time long, in order to avoid time-consuming examining during repeated requirement.

Restriction

Content filters can examine only Url's, texts and pictures, which are classified according to certain standards. Texts, which are represented as image, cannot be examined. Naturally it is also impossible to lead Blacklists of all unwanted sides.

Content filters are not replacement for solely responsible, meaningful handling the Internet. In particular parents or teachers are, believe with installation of a content filter their order for educating to have fulfilled, on the wrong track.

Under Linux the free program Dansguardian is available as good, fast content filter. Dansguardian work in connection with a Proxyserver, e.g. Squid.
