The CL-net is today a collection of Internet forums on basis of Usenet technology with political contents, whose meaning is only marginal in view of that variety in the Internet. The net was however the first important infrastructure for the computer cross-linking of peace, human right and environmental's groups and - organizations in the German-speaking countries.
The CL-net was based when its establishment 1991 almost exclusively on individual, interlaced mailbox systems, which functioned after the ZConnect standard and exchanged according to the net curtain and forward principle private and public reports.
It developed from the union of the two nets Compost and link systems, from which the technical term ComLink, shortened, was formed for CL. The contraction CL was reinterpreted later than computer network of link systems.
Its largest spreading had the CL-net about 1996. At this time it consisted of more than 200 systems. It had systems in all German-speaking countries and in some other countries (Turkey, Italy, the Balkans).
Apart from the possibility of exchanging enamels the participants could exchange messages for a long time before spreading of the Internet over public forums, which were called at that time in the CL-net of boards. Contents covered a broad spectrum of the political topics. Many politically working organizations, groups and individuals saw an advantage for their work in the new possibilities of electronic communication. The systems of the CL-net had to argue in addition, with skepticism of this target group in relation to the modern technology.
The net was basis-democratically organized. Like many other mailbox nets also, long strategic discussions over adjustment, openness and financing took place also on the co-ordination level of the CL-net.

For binding to the international network organization "Association for progressive Communication" (APC) assembled 1992 the association "ComLink registered association". From this developed the so-called CL-net, which bears the name of "computer network of link systems". (...) (Source: Protection of the constitution report Baden-Wuerttemberg 1999)
