By a Chatrollenspiel one understands a game of roles, which is played over a Chat. Each participant slips into one or more play figures, in order to then out-pass on the action of the figures in the Chat. The action is usually out-played in real time, sometimes also somewhat faster, sometimes somewhat more slowly. Most take place in the IRC.

A Chatrollenspiel is based on the imaginative power of the participants and if necessary the conditions by the category, into which it plays. It is thus similarly reading a book, however with the difference that therein it can participate actively and be painted and the exit of history does not stand before firmly often yet. In addition, there are variants, where only film scenes are after-played, similarly the theatre.

The Ausspielen of the action takes place by means of the fact that each participant in many text passages describes the action of his game of roles character in the action format. Discussions are led directly, as usual in the Chat otherwise. Offtopic topics are written often strictly in square brackets, in order to distinguish it from the Ontopic contents of the game of roles.

The description of the environment can be transferred in a Chatrollenspiel by a play leader. This coordinated besides the players, the expiration of play and mediated if necessary in diversities of opinion between them, takes thus a moderator post. Often players describe the environment however in arrangement with the play leader independently. Therein also so-called NPCs (non played character) can occur. Those are characters, which are not played, but by the played characters in their actions to be observed.

Some Chatrollenspiele offer additionally the possibility of putting on a profile observable outside of the Chatrollenspiels by its play figure of merging diagrams as well as within the Chats a cube to simulate, around the exit of events out cubes. Some use also during the play sound effects for the better Untermalung, develop data bases over their contents and sets of rules to the play. It gives many category, in which Chatrollenspiele are possible: e.g. Science Fiction, Fantasy, the Middle Ages, current TV-series.

They are closely related to games of roles in forums and by E-Mail, often use Chatrollenspiele forums as support for the play or its advancement. There are therefore some Chatrollenspiele, which see themselves also simultaneous as on-line Community. A Chat with a program, which simulates an interactive environment, falls already into the range MUD (multi-user Dungeon).
