When IRC Channel, often only Channel or Chan mentioned, a special form of Chatrooms designated, which is to be found in the Internet Relay Chat. With them certain characteristics are connected, which are not to be found in general Chatrooms necessarily.

Channel carry in all rule a name with a lozenge (#) begin, although also Channel with special functions are intended in the IRC standard, which begin with a plus (+).

 Channel Prefixe: # = more normally channel & = locally channel (no communication between 2 servers possible) + = modeless, kicken avoid, modes do not set etc. not possible! = not more collidable channel (see here) 

On most IRC however only the "“normal ones"” and "“restaurants"” the Channel exist to networks, whereby on some larger networks, as the QuakeNet restaurants becomes closed already.

With the instruction /list can be indicated the Channel, on the IRC server and/or IRC network, with which one is connected, are. However no Channel is shown, which was marked as Secret or private ones.

In a Channel one can participate with the instruction /join #channame. New Channel is put on, by entering her with the same instruction. As a first user in the Channel one keeps then the so-called Channel operator status, short to ChanOP.

ChanOps attitudes for the Channel can set assistance of Channelmodes.

In many IRC networks Channel assistance can be registered by services.
