The verb canceln (from the English tons of cancel = cancel) designates a dispatching of a recommendation automatically evaluable by software in the Usenet that the operators of the many new servers can delete or from the new server software delete let a certain article locally with itself. One calls so a message cancel Message. It differs from usual Usenet articles by a line in the header (where also senders, Subject, newsgroup, date etc. stand) with the following syntax:

Control: cancel <899qh19zehlhsdfa@foo.bar.com>

This message appears not readable in the newsgroup concerned, but recommends, to delete the article with the Message ID <899qh19zehlhsdfa@foo.bar.com> and becomes visible with many new servers in the pseudo newsgroup control or control cancel. Is usual, but not technical facility for functioning to arrange the Subject line of a cancel Message as follows:

Subject: cmsg cancel <899qh19zehlhsdfa@foo.bar.com>

Up to strictly defined exceptional cases one may do only its own article canceln. If one cancelt articles of other people, which normally forbidden and only in case of of Spam (to high Breidbart index) is desired, a cancel Message must exhibit still further characteristics, in order not to apply than bad abuse. This requires experience and extreme care.

Usual new servers permit to adjust very flexibly after a whole number of different criteria to which these recommendations is to be followed and which not. There are however also new servers, which do not permit any Cancels for the avoidance of abuse.

Newsreader, thus the programs, with which one participates in the Usenet, generally a function (switching surface o.dgl.) named "“message to break off"”, "“cancel Usenet Message"” etc. has, in order to produce and send a cancel Message.
