Broadband global AREA network (BGAN, in former times also RBGAN, which stood for AREA network for regionally Broadband global) is mobile "broadband "- an Internet and a telephone solution of the satellite operator Inmarsat.
With a BGAN Satellitenmodem it is to be surfen possible with a speed of up to 492 kbit/s in the Internet and telephoned (all data terminals have connection types for telephones).
Initially users had to align their modem still to the Thuraya satellite, since Inmarsat up to the start of the Inmarsat-4 satellites availed itself still of the Thuraya range. After the removal Thuraya offers now its own data solution, which calls her Thuraya DSL.
In the middle of 2005 moved the data service on the new Inmarsat-4 satellite. With the removal also the service with high order BGAN was introduced and R from RBGAN was painted. RBGAN is however further with very inexpensive terminals as pure Internet service available, however with clearly smaller ranges than BGAN and without possibility of telephoning. In the year 2007 handygleiche "terminals should be available beside the today available data terminals also ".
The service should be world-wide available in the future. Starting from in the middle of 2006 the second Inmarsat-4-Satellit is taken in enterprise. With it apart from Europe, Africa, Asia and the middle east also the complete American continent is covered.
