The Breidbart index (BI) is a term from the Usenet. This concerns a number, which defines, how intensively substanziell contents or advertisement for the same service with many copies and/or in many newsgroup resembles was spread. If a permitted value is exceeded, one calls the Usenet articles concerned Spam.

The computation Breidbart index is so complicated, because there are several possibilities, the same into several newsgroup to posts:

  1. either with a copy and a one with commas concatenated list of newsgroup in place of the newsgroup name,
  2. or with several copies in only ever newsgroup,
  3. or with a combination of both.

The Breidbart index tries to consider that the first variant represents not as bad resources theft as second. To the Breidbart index each copy contributes the square root from the number of newsgroup, into which this was gepostet copy. One calls the sum of these contributions Breidbart index.

Is it of importance, within which period the articles were gepostet. If it is not differently regulated, everything is taken in account, which was gepostet within 45 days. Deviating from it there is the term in the German-language Usenet BI7 with one period of 7 days.

According to general agreement net far, in no newsgroup, the Breidbart index may do a value of

20 within 45 days

exceed. Otherwise it concerns Spam, and it is desired that third it canceln. The Fremdcanceln must hold itself on very strict formal rules, requires experience, and errors can provoke thereby much "“bad blood"”.

In some partial hierarchies, e.g. in the newsgroup de.*, apply still sharper restrictions on the basis of a majority decision (tuning by E-Mail).

The Breidbart index is designated after its inventor Seth Breidbart.

Was historically seen the all first Spam, which was noticeable net far unpleasantly and which to it it forced, it too canceln, to in the middle of the 90's one in extremely many newsgroup gespamte Werbekampagne of the law office Canter & seal (the USA), where thereby it was recruited, in the participation in drawing by lots of Greencards to be helpful.
