A Bounce Message (English: reflect,), Delivery status Notification (DSN) back-throw message or briefly Bounce called, are an error message, which is produced automatically by a Mailserver, if a E-Mail is not deliverable.

This error message is sent to the undeliverable E-Mail by E-Mail to the sender (Envelope transmitter) and has even an empty Envelope transmitter (<>), in order to prevent Mail loops. As From: Address is used frequently the address MAILER-DAEMON@mailserver or POSTMASTER@mailserver.

One differentiates between Hardbounces, which result from permanent errors, for example if the E-Mail address of the receiver does not exist and Softbounces, which is produced for temporary problems, is exhausted for example if the Quota of the p.o. box of the receiver or the non removable disk fully.
