Blackberry is the name of one of the Canadian enterprise Research in Motion (RIM) developed solution for wireless communication, primarily for E-Mail and personnel information manager (PIM) - data. This solution covers an Client server architecture, BlackBerry minutes between Clients and servers and a series of BlackBerry able terminals (Smartphone) of RIM. The net connection is made over the usual GPRS binding over a portable radio operator.
The substantial function of the Blackberrys consists of being able to send everywhere enamels as Push service received and. Beyond that it offers the usual PDA functions, like directory, calendar, ton DO lists etc. and additionally Handy functions such as Telefonie, SMS and Web Browsing.Im difference to a conventional PDA does not have the user not about the synchronization of the data to worry. With the Blackberry enamels, calendar entries, notes and directory entries by Push service from the server to the Handheld will transfer. That is, that the Handheld is always held on the current conditions, as long as a connection exists. Decreases the developing costs, which would result from constant querying. At the same time it makes the immediate notification and feed possible with new enamels and dates as by SMS admits. A further important function results from the mobile data service (MDS). It possible also different data from the firm network - e.g. from ERP systems, data bases etc. - on the Blackberry is to be made by this accessible. Thus price or camp information can be called up, released order procedures or changed customer data.
The putting out characteristic of the BlackBerry technology is that the data set which can be transferred is kept consciously small: The Blackberry Enterprise server (BES) prepares all data special, compresses these and streamt this then to the terminal out. Thus more than 2 KB data are never sent to the Handheld. Only if the user more data needs, these are requested by the equipment. This requirement takes place "seamless", i.e., without the user notices this, or to wait must. For example so MByte large files can (like e.g. PDF or Office files) despite GPRS binding to be fast opened: The Blackberry Enterprise server opens the appendix on requirement, converts it into an text-oriented file and sends this to the Client. Via POP3-Protokoll the server would send the entire file unchanged to the Client: i.e. the user can open only then the file if it is completely down-loaded and the user needs a high performance terminal around larger files to process also accordingly to be able. Besides is each data traffic of the server, made of which enterprise network codes out to the Handheld, and back. The original RIM devices can be adjusted additionally in such a way that they do not only secure equipment contents via password, but this to also still code. The BlackBerry service can be used only with a special option, which must be booked with the portable radio operator specially for the portable radio map. This so-called "BlackBerry option" contains basic charges, and a fee for the assigned volume of data. Here it is to be marked that for the exclusive BlackBerry Push service, with approx. 500 enamels in the month and calendar use of approximately 100 entries the week is used, hardly more than 1 MT in the month.
The controlling of the equipment essentially takes place with a Trackwheel and a Escape-Taste at the right equipment side. Thus the Blackberry makes a consistent one-hand operation possible. Contrary to other Smartphones all functionalities can be implemented comfortably with a hand. The text input effected by means of one, for the operation with the thumb optimized, complete QWERTZ keyboard.
On the Blackberry terminals a operating system of the company RIM, it runs supports WAP and Java (J2ME).
The terminals of the manufacturer RIM support all functions of the Blackberry Enterprise of server in the momentary version exclusively. There are several devices on the market, which criteria defined by the manufacturer must fulfill, which a part of functionality supports:
Blackberry Connect: The same 3DES coding is supported as on the BlackBerry Handhelds. Are supported E-Mail, calendars, contacts, Browser, tasks and notes. The only devices, those at present Blackberry Connect contain are driven out the P910 von Sony Ericsson and the models MDA II and MDA III, from T-mobile.
Blackberry Build in: The 3DES coding is supported also here as on the BlackBerry Handhelds. It, by mostly specially to up-pass on a software Client, a E-Mail, a calendar and an on-line access on the global address list supported.
The Push service is made available in the Backoffice by the Blackberry Enterprise server (BES), that is had for his part a binding to the Groupware systems Microsoft Exchange, Novell Groupwise and Lotus domino.
The server supervises the mailbox of the user on detailed Mails and passes these on to the network operation center (NOC) of RIM. From there the Mails is sent to the Mobilfunkprovider and transferred then by radio to the Blackberry. On the same way the transmission of calendar entries, ton DOS, addresses and notes (Push service) functions. If the entries on the Blackberry are seized or written enamels, the data communication takes place into reverse direction toward the Groupware system.
The BES permits safety attitudes also increased to companies. So can be controlled, which applications may be installed (inclusive. Remote installation) and the equipment with loss also by an administrator from the distance to be completely deleted (connection to the server exists so long).
Concomitantly private users and small enterprises (Prosumer) parts of the Blackberry technology to use can, make the Mobilfunkprovider available server, which make the basis service E-Mail available. Here external POP3/IMAP/OWA/LWA of p.o. boxes is merged and the enamels at Handheld, fetched there, are then continued to lead. The possibility exists of masking answers of the Handheld with its own E-Mail address that the E-Mail address generated by the portable radio offerer does not have to be used. This service is offered for the moment in Germany von T-Mobile, Vodafone, E-Plus and CO2. The offer is at present still another rudimentary "p.o. box collecting service", which continues to lead received enamels simply, and answers with a central return address provides. Functions such as calendar, directory or task synchronisation do not take place.
The alignment between Handheld and Server takes place with older models by means of a special Pager network, with newer in the GSM net by means of GPRS in coded and compressed form. For coding 3DES is supported and with servers starting from version 4 also AES.
BlackBerry user according to RIM data:
RIM could set itself by this strong increase with a market share of 20,8 % to the point of the PDA market (May 05)
Meanwhile there is a software solution named Blackberry Connect, which copies BlackBerry functionality on PDAs, e.g. on Windows CE devices like the MDA 3 of T-mobile, or Sony Ericsson P910i. At present only equipment with full BlackBerry functionality outside of the RIM devices, is the SK65 von Siemens. This disappoints however at the power management, so that it represents its own section opposite the "genuine" Blackberry.
The first model of the row, the Blackberry 850, appeared 1999.
