The Billboard of magazines is the most important technical and industry sheet for music and Entertainment in the USA. It was already created 1894. The head office is in New York. Further offices will maintain in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., London and Tokyo. It appears weekly. Since 2005 it is in the possession of the Dutch conglomerate VNU.

The Billboard of magazines determines and publishes the official US-Verkaufscharts for music albums (The Billboard 200), Singles (The Billboard Hot 100) and further hit lists for different music directions, as for example R&B, Hip Hop, Country and Latin.

By the magazine the Billboard Music Awards in over 30 categories is lent annually. The winners are determined, comparably the German ECHO, on the basis the sales figures of the yearly.

History

When Billboard was created in the year 1894, it was originally concerned with Karnevalsunterhaltung. The music extent of the industry sheet became larger, so that into the 1950ern the music topics were separated into a new magazine.

On 4 January 1936 published Billboard the first hit parade and on 20 July 1940 was determined the first Schlagercharts (English Music Popularity Chart). Since 1958 becomes the Billboard Hot 100 published, which consists of the bestverkauften Singles and the usually-played Radiosongs.

Billboard today

The Billboard magazine covers today all ranges of the Unterhaltungsindustrie: of DVDs over video cassettes up to the music down load over Internet. It offers many new stories and opinion-reflecting articles. One finds the magazine occasionally in the shelves of some business, however it is main for the professionals of the music industry (e.g. for managers of large labels or for DJs) meant. Despite this intensive reporting over the Billboard is mainly well-known for its Charts.

Billboards method of the Charts production

For many years a Song had to be available in the trade as single, in order to become certified for the Charts. At this time Billboard seized its data by reports, which were filled out by the transmitters and shops. 1990 was followed the Country single Charts the first, which used a system named Nielsen sound CAN, of the Top 100 and the R"´n"´B single Charts 1991.

Nielsen sound CAN is a system, which registers the sales of a single, if this becomes scanned by an sound-CAN-able cash. In addition Billboard uses a technology named Broadcast DATA of system (BDS), a subsidiary company of Billboard, in order to seize radio radiant emittances. In principle each Song has a kind finger mark. If it is played by a transmitter with BDS contract, then this is registered. These registrations are added each week with all Radiosendern, in order to specify "“transmission points"”.

Each of the many Billboard Charts uses today this basic formula. Which differentiates between it, is the selection of the shops and transmitters, which are used. Each category department with Billboard is led by Chart managers, who specify this selection. Sometimes thereby then conditions apply to a department, which does not apply to another. The most well-known example of it was Madonnas song "“Into the Groove"”. In the USA it was available only as B-side of the single "“fishing rod"” - at this time was not acceptable for the managers of the Top-100-Charts. Thus the Song did not become despite intensive radiant emittance for the Top 100 certified. On the other hand the R"´n"´B single Charts did not make these demands, therefore "“Into The Groove"” appeared there - and also into the Hot Dance Music/club Play Charts platzierte itself it on 1.

A further example: Due to their 2003 against US-American president George W. Bush (the third Gulf War) Madonnas Singles "“American Life"”, "“Hollywood"”, "“emergency-hung Fails"” and "“Love pro fusion"” of the republican led radio stations boycotted. Although they well sold themselves (Billboard Sales Charts: 2, 4, 1, 4), and also into the club Charts well ran (Billboard club Charts: there 1, 1, 1, 1) it not and/or only badly led in the important Billboard Hot 100 Charts (37, -, -, -) these mostly at the Airplay to orient itself.

Before September 1995 it was permitted a single to enter in the first sales week into the Charts exclusively based on the BDS points. This procedure was then changed to favour of a system, which permitted the entrance only after a complete sales week. This made possible many Songs an entrance "“of 0 to 1"”. In December 1998 the system was continued to modify, in order to permit Songs, which had to show excluding television or radio radiant emittance, but no available single. This change should consider to the changing realities in the music business. Up to then many important MTV or radio hit was not to be set in motion in the Charts emerged, since itself the music industry had decided to publish no single in hope thereby the album sales. Before the 90ern such a procedure would have been inconceivable. Under the innumerable Songs, which fell before 1999 of this barrier to the victim are Nirvanas "“universe Apologies"”, The Cardigans' "“Lovefool"”, Smash Mouths "“Walking on the Sun"”, Jamiroquais "“Virtual Insanity"” Everclears "“Santa Monica"”, Stone Temple Pilots' "“inter+done Love Song"”, nearly ball "“The Way"”, Smashing Pumpkins"´ "“Disarm"”, and The Cranberries"´ "“Zombie"” and innumerable Songs of Green Day, live one, The off-jump, NO Doubt, talk Hot Chili Peppers, Alanis Morissette and the Foo Fighters.

Since 2005 Billboard again changed its methods, in order to be able to seize paid Downloads of Shops like iTunes or the like (also bell tones) with. By these it artists (among other things Madonna) makes itself possible in the Hot 100 platzieren, even if they are ignored to a large extent by the radio.
