The term backbone and/or Backbone (English backbone - backbone) is not uniformly used. Generally one names a central range of a telecommunications net with very high ranges.

LAN

Within the LAN range one speaks Backbone of a building Backbone or a core SWITCH and means with it the part of a structured wiring, which the projectiles connects, or also only, then one means the area net, which connects several buildings. Particularly in the floor wiring between two kinds one differentiates:

Collapsed Backbone

With the Collapsed Backbone concerns it a virtual Backbone, which in a Kopplungselement like one rout or for a SWITCH and/or in its baking tarpaulin one forms. By the few active net components a central management of the Backbones is possible, which leads to simple maintenance and thus a more reliable, safer net. In addition a Collapsed Backbone improves the total output of the net and facilitates the transition between network configurations of LANs and WANs. The only disadvantage of the Collapsed Backbone is in the fact justified that with an instrument failure communication of all Tertiary period ranges breaks down.

Distributed Backbone

Distributed Backbones are a variant rather become outdated. Here the individual floor distributors are connected by a ring, which must run within the structured wiring also by the building distributor. In former times for this 10Base5 or FDDI were used. Since the Backbone its own Subnetz forms, devices on layer 3 of the OSI model must be used, in order to generate own Subnetze within the floor wiring. In addition thus the management and the education are made more difficult by building-spreading VLANs.

WAN

Within the WAN range the term refers "„Backbone "“to the core net in a hierarchical lattice structure, which is protected usually from losses by lamination of its components (Protection).

From application view, e.g. from the view of a network carrier for Internet connections it can look e.g. as follows: The Backbone in an educated manner from the interconnected central nodes of the Internets and their wide-band high-speed connections. To associate only over the connections of the Backbones the members of different connection nets (e.g. in an educated manner by the different dial UP Provider) made possible with one another with other participants in other connection nets. The today's Backbones does not correspond to the original Design intention of the ARPA net in its topology any longer regarding equivalence of all participants. Rather from the historical conditions since establishment of the Internets with the read-oriented development an cost-oriented concept arose for a material structure for realization.
