Audible is the Internet portal for the Download of hearing books, leading world-wide, and so-called "“audio magazines"”, a spoken version of newspapers and magazines.

Function mode

Over the Website users download themselves audio contents from the Internet on their computer. These can be played then on the most different mobile terminals, those the Audible file format support (e.g. MP3-Player, Smartphones, PDAs etc.). All audio contents are playable also on the PC and/or Mac, can be burned on CD and shown over CD-Player. The Audible file format was developed particularly for spoken audio contents (hearing books, audio magazines, etc.) and be based not on that CD TRACK structure, but the user refers an individual file, which can be downloaded also at any time again from a personal on-line library on the Audible Internet side. Thus the necessity for a personal backup copy is void. Besides the Audible file format supports additional characteristics like automatically set bookmarks (also with several titles) or sheets by chapters, which are not supported by MP3-Dateien.

The enterprise Audible Inc. (NASDAQ: ADBL) was created 1997 by the US-American best-selling author Donald Katz. Audible is pioneer for Downloads and inventors of the first "“digitally audio"” - Players (a forerunner of the MP3-Players), which stands today in the Smithsonian museum. Since that time Audible developed to the world-wide most extensive Download platform for hearing books and further audio contents like spoken newspaper and magazine articles, radio contents and selected TV-formats. Audible has today more as one half million customer and offers more than 75,000 hours at audio contents from 250 publishing house partners to the Download on (conditions: July 2005). Beside Germany Audible with homepage is represented in the USA, Great Britain and France. Additionally to the own on-line appearance Audible equips world-wide that iTunes Music net curtain with spoken audio contents.

The German Audible portal is operated of in Munich the residents Audible GmbH. It was created on 30 August 2004 as Joint venture between Audible Inc., the Holtzbrinck NetworXs AG as well as the group of publishing houses random House (Bertelsmann).
