An analog telephone adapter, ATA abbreviated, is equipment, which makes a connection with one or more similar standard telephones over the Voice over IP net. Normally it is a small box with a Ethernet haven (for the Internet entrance) and one or more telephone connections. This makes possible it to use the already existing similar telephones for Voice over IP further. The advantage of this solution consists of the fact that one can telephone also with switched off PC and its existing DSL modem does not have to replace by new equipment.

The manufacturers recognized and offer the trend to ever more VoIP connections, strengthen a VoIP routing with integrated DSL modem and ATA on. Well-known example for this is those FRITZ! Box Fon of AVM.

ATAs nearly always use SIP or IAX as minutes. Increasingly the ATA function integrated gateways in rout/.

By auxiliary hardware also complete telephone systems can be attached to ATAs. This is possible e.g. with the help of the Auerswald box of Auerswald. In order to connect the telephone system with a ATA, a free branch of the telephone system is necessary. Thus it is then possible to use by each branch of the telephone system out over selection of the branch, at which the ATA is attached, for VOIP.
