For the end of the yearly 1995 by the research lab of the Digital Equipment corporation (DEC) was presented the first search machine, in which one could accomplish a full text search after relevant sides in the Internet. From this research topic the search machine AltaVista developed. This was developed by Louis criticizes, Joella Paquette and Paul Flaherty.

In February 1997 AltaVista went as the first search machine in the WWW to the start. Basic principle of the Ranking algorithm used by AltaVista was the evaluation of the Meta tags on the HTML sides. At the same time however also text fragments were indexed by the HTML sides with and consulted after an internal logic for the classification of on the left of on a Ranking position.

With the assumption of the DEC by Compaq the one time became long tried AltaVista as Web portal to form from AltaVista its own enterprise. In the meantime one specializes there looking for. The extent of the seized Websites is however substantially smaller than from Google.

Six years after the start, in February 2003, the AltaVista company fastened in the meantime was transferred surprisingly by Overture, a company, the search technology was developed and itself meanwhile in the possession of Yahoo! Inc. finds.

Meanwhile AltaVista gains again market shares, because the side is not as strongly affected by the Spamming as Google and therefore supplies often more appropriate results.

The service Babelfish developed by AltaVista was the first machine Internet translation service, which can translate words, cliches or whole Websites from the Chinese one, German, English, French, Greek one, Italian, Japanese, Korean one, Netherlands one, Portuguese one, Russian one and Spanish.
