AlltheWeb is based an Internet search machine, which was introduced 1999 by nearly search and transfer, on 1997 a search engine developed by the same company. Although it in size and technology could keep up with Google, it became never in such a manner admits.

AlltheWeb even possessed some advantages opposite Google. In addition counted for example a more current data base, more advanced search possibilities and a completely adaptable appearance. In February 2003 the Internet search department was bought up by nearly search and transfer by Overture, those again in March 2004 of Yahoo! one took over. Shortly thereafter began one, the data base of Yahoo! for the search to use and, as for example the ftp search removed some extended search options. Still AlltheWeb permits however the search on the basis of boolean expressions.

Nearly search and transfer wanted to make the data base available other search machines with the start of the search machine, similarly as Inktomi that had already before successfully done. Lycos actually used the results 2000 in the Lycos PRO search. At this time the data base had already increased from 80 million to 200 million sides. The goal of taking up entire publicly attainable Internet was by far not yet reached however. 2002 had seized the Crawler already over 2 billion sides and introduced so a new round in the fight of the search machines. Before the buying up by Yahoo! contained the data base about 3.3 billion URIs.

The magazine "“PC Pr@xis"” (expenditure 05/04) judged AlltheWeb as the best search machine world-wide, even better than Google.
